Nike Dunk Low Ultraman Review

By Anthony Levine, longtime sneaker collector.

The Nike Dunk Low Ultraman are keeping with my theme of collecting retros of colorways I used to have. I had a pair of these from 1999, a release that is a Japanese exclusive if I’m not mistaken. Here, we get a wider release and I’m finally able to have them in the collection again!

The drop for this shoe was similar to the Reverse Curry in that we are taking a late 90’s – early 00’s type Dunk colorway from Japan and giving it a worldwide release.

It feels great having a brand new version of the sneaker again. I always regretted selling my old pair, but the paint on them had started to peel and I wasn’t feeling how the aging was looking. Plus I had hand-stuffed the tongues, something I won’t be doing on this purchase!

These come laced with grey laces in a regular Nike Sportswear box with an additional pair of spare red laces.

The shoes come in at $135, same price as the Reverse Currys I mentioned earlier, adding to my theory that this is some kind of “retro pack”. They do outshine your typical $115 Dunk release as far as quality.

Materials

I prefer these to most basic Dunks out there as far as the leather. Instead of the normal, plasticky, extra shiny leather found on general release Dunks, we get a slightly softer and less “coated” looking upper. Not top-tier butteriness by any means, but somewhat nicer material overall. These even feel slightly nicer than the leather on the Reverse Curry QS.

Fit & Comfort

These sneakers boast an accommodating fit, and the soft leather uppers require almost no break-in time.

I went true to size on these. Half size down might have been doable here, but not worth the risk in my opinion. Given the lack of cushioning technology on a shoe like this, we get a basic, solid feel underfoot. The sneakers are definitely comfy enough for general casual wear.

If these are sold out in stores, you can try looking for them on eBay.
