1999 Nike Dunk High Goldenrod (Iowa) Review

Updated November 26, 2017 by Anthony

Aye! I think this might be one of the last BTTYS dunks in my collection! I remember when I bought the 1999 Nike Dunk High Goldenrod AKA Iowa, I had to pay a grip!

Now prices have settled down, but that doesn’t stop these from being a true classic. These came out in 1999 alongside a bunch of other college-team-colored kicks. BTTYS stands for Be True To Your School.

Black on black on black! I’d definitely avoid trying to match up the yellow here and instead opt for black or even black and red. In this case I’m pairing these kicks with a black long sleeve Bape tee, an elongated white tee and some black jeans. I could also have done a black tee with some accents in another color besides yellow. A super cheesy outfit would probably be something like these with a Wu-Tang t-shirt. In my opinion though, matching up the yellow is too obvious a play with shoes like these.

A couple years ago I made it my mission to get some 1999 dunks and I’m glad I did. Even though many BTTYS dunks retro’d again in 2016 complete with the nylon tongues, the quality and shape is sub par when compared with the originals. Now that the hype on dunks is low, I highly recommend looking for old pairs you may want before their popularity rebounds!

How Are The Materials?

These are made out of leather and the quality is great! The only other material on here is the nylon tongues – a hallmark of the 1999 LE dunks. If you like that “old school” leather, any of the BTTYS dunks are going to definitely be of interest. I highly recommend copping at least one pair from this era if you’re a dunk fanatic purely based on material quality.

How Do They Fit?

The 1999 Nike Dunk High Goldenrod aka Iowa fit big and are comfortable. I went true to size on this pair. These shoes aren’t technologically advanced at all; the point of these is simple, easy comfort and wearability. The shape on these is dynamite as well. I might be overthinking it, but I found these Iowas to be slightly blockier than other LE highs from 1999 that I own.
