I picked up the NASA Vans last year, but besides that I haven’t gotten anything from the brand in a while. The Purlicue X Vans Old Skool Year of the Pig are a collab with a number of details and deserve their spot as my first pickup of the year!
These feature a pink shoebox, 2 extra sets of laces, a Purlicue branded print on the insole, a larger vans logo on the rear and “The Fat Year” printed on the outsole. Most noticeable though are the velcro removable Vans stripes, which can be either white or red.
White and red is one of the easiest colorways to form an outfit with. You can even wear just black with these and they will look dope. Light or dark blue denim and a white or black top works great too. I would avoid joggers though, which is annoying for me, but Old Skools in my opinion tend to look better with denim.
How Are The Materials?
The suede and canvas materials are not that great, but not terrible either. I would say they are standard for a pair of Old Skools. Basically a lot more attention went into the details and extras, and so a premium buttery suede is not on the menu. The leather used on the Vans stripes is decent, but overall these take the more rugged approach (typical for this brand).
How Do They Fit?
The Purlicue X Vans Old Skool Year of the Pig fit true to size. I tend to not risk it on Vans because they can be very uncomfortable if they are too small. At TTS though, these are extremely comfortable and great for walking around in or hanging out. I am not a skater so I can’t comment on that aspect but from a casual standpoint these are nice!
Overall the different features on this collab and the bright red and white colorway are what sold me on these. I’m really trying to stick to 1-2 pickups per month this year, which means a shoe will have to be something I’m really feeling to be let in. These definitely make the cut for January 2019!
