Puma Suede x Santa Cruz Skateboards Review

By Anthony Levine, longtime sneaker collector.

After the pickup on the Made In Japan colorway, I found out about these. The Puma Suede x Santa Cruz Skateboards are also part of the 50th year celebration of the model (originally released in 1968).

The shoes come with a specially branded 50th anniversary box and feature the Santa Cruz Skateboards logo on the tongue tag and insole. The most noticeable feature though is the embroidered Santa Cruz “screaming hand” graphic and styled Puma stripe representing SC Skates iconic graphic.

I would opt for khaki (playing off the gumsole) or black/dark colored denim with these. Joggers could look ok but jeans are definitely the better look here. A simple black top goes great with these. Remember, these are more evocative of a skater aesthetic thanks to the color scheme, materials and co-branding, so aiming for that look will help in rocking this particular pair of Suedes.

I have to stop myself from continually buying Puma suedes, but they’re so good! Being a resident of Santa Cruz, I had to go back and get these before it was too late! I’m a big fan of the sneaker and I hope other sneakerheads take a chance on the Puma Suede Classic if they have never tried it before, as it is one of the comfier classic kicks that stands the test of time!

How Are The Materials?

These are supposed to be a little more rugged to represent Santa Cruz Skateboards and the overall vibe of the town’s skaters, so although the suede isn’t terrible, it’s not buttery smooth either. Overall the shoe is solidly constructed and nice for what it is, but don’t expect lush or surprising materials. These do feature a leather ankle liner like other 50th anniversary releases.

How Do They Fit?

The Puma Suede x Santa Cruz Skateboards fit true to my Puma size of 9.5. Generally, this is a half down from my regular Nike size of 10. The shoe is surprisingly cushy for what is at its core a basic casual shoe, and is very comfortable overall, requiring little to no break in.
