Ah, Black Friday sales! And Cyber Monday for that matter! Both times when sneakerheads can come up. This year, one of my pickups is the Packer Asics Gel Lyte III Game Set Match, which is not only a Packer Shoes exclusive, but also a collab with Mitchell & Ness.
The shoe has Packer shoes branding on the tongue tag and insole. The insole also features a tennis racket pattern, and rackets are embossed on the rear of the shoes. The final feature is the mismatched Asics striping on the sides. One side is burgundy while the other features more navy. The back of the shoes have similar treatment with the mismatched colors. The shoe comes with 3 lace choices although only one set are rope laces and the other two are flat.
I’ve got a soft spot for offwhite shoes because they go great with neutral outfits. Today I went with a light grey polo hoodie with an elongated scoop tee underneath and some light jeans. I almost rocked these with a burgundy hoodie and some dark jeans and I could see these working in either direction thanks to the darker tones on the Asics stripes.
Overall I think this collab is a really great way to celebrate the US Open or just the dopeness of Gel Lyte III’s in general! These released in a pack with a bunch of other Asics models (5 shoes in total) but the GLIII are the only ones I’m interested in, with the Gel Sights running a distant second. It’s a good coincidence that right when I was considering some new GLIII, these popped up on sale!
How Are The Materials?
These aren’t the butteriest shoes you’re ever going to find. That said, the materials are definitely better than your average GR Gel Lyte III. Most of the shoe is a decent quality suede and the leather used on the stripes and tongue seems to look quality even if the texture isn’t super soft. Of course there’s a little bit of 3M near the toebox, pretty standard on GLIII.
How Do They Fit?
The Packer Asics Gel Lyte III Game Set Match fit snug but comfortable. The split tongue is always a point of contention with people either loving GLIIIs for it or hating them. If you can get with the tongue style, these are a really comfortable shoe that I would recommend going true to size in.
