Nike Air Max Plus Sunset Review

Updated March 27, 2025 by Anthony

The Nike Air Max Plus “Sunset” is one of those pairs that’s been around for decades but never really gets old. Originally dropping in 1998, this colorway has made its way back a few times over the years, with retros in 2014 and 2018. With this latest version, Nike brings it back with some slight tweaks—because of course they did. The gradient leans a little more yellow up top, and some of the reflective 3M hits from past versions have been swapped out.

Despite the changes, the look still holds up. The black-to-orange fade, paired with the wavy TPU overlays, makes this one of the most recognizable Air Max Plus colorways ever. Some call these the “Tigers,” others the “Pimentos,” but whatever name you go with, they’re a classic!

One cool thing about these? The gradient. That’s really what sells the shoe. When I saw these go on sale at Champs, I figured it was finally time to own a version of this OG colorway.

These come in the standard orange Nike box, laced up with black skinny oval laces—simple, but it gets the job done.

Materials

Air Max Pluses have never really been a “materials” shoe, and this one is no different. The upper is a mix of synthetic leather on the mudguard, plastic TPU waves, and a mesh underlay. Nothing premium, but they’re put together well enough for what they are.

Fit & Comfort

These fit snug at true to size, but not uncomfortably so—at least for me. If you’ve got wider feet, you might want to consider going up half a size.

The nickname “Air Max TN” comes from the original “Tuned Air” technology that debuted with the shoe. Whether or not that tech is still in the midsole today is anyone’s guess, but the classic TN badge is alive and well. Cushion-wise, the Air units in the midsole help keep things lightweight and provide some bounce, but overall, these have that standard retro Air Max feel. Comfortable, but nothing crazy compared to modern runners.

If these are sold out online, you can try looking for them on eBay.
