Nike Air Max BW OG Review

By Anthony Levine, longtime sneaker collector.

The Air Max BW is a sneaker that releases every now and then and was originally advertised alongside the Air Max III (later known as the Air Max 90).

What Year Did The Air Max BW Come Out?

The Air Max BW originally released in 1991 in black, white and Persian Violet colorways and one women’s colorway.

They released as a part of the Nike International series, hence the Nike International logo on the insole of the Air Max BW Persian Violet 2021 retro.

Who Designed The Air Max BW?

Tinker Hatfield is the genius behind many Nike releases in the 90s including the Air Max BW.

What Does Air Max BW Mean?

The “BW” in the name is short for “Big Window”. This unit was to surpass the Air Max 3’s air unit in size, promising “even more Air Max”.

Some Quirks Unique to this model

One thing the BW is known for is the cut on the mudguard. The layered design seems to go all the way to the back of the sneaker. This design choice imitates speed and motion when running.

The Nike Air logo on the tongue is embossed into the thick mesh on the tongue. Right next to this, the top 4 eyelets are square instead of round.

This design choice extends to the outsole of the sneaker where a cube design pattern is visible towards the middle. The rubbery swoosh and Air Max lettering on the rear round out the quirks on this particular shoe.

As mentioned earlier, Persian Violet is an original colorway for this model that released in 1991. It has been rereleased multiple times, and the 2021 release brings the sneaker closer to the feel of the original release. The shoe even features the size printed on the inner ankle collar just like the OG.

The nickname refers to the shade of bluish purple used on the upper alongside the black and white makeup of the shoe. For many, this is the most iconic colorway of the sneaker.

As far as what is included in the “OG” Persian Violet release, these come in the OG looking box. This is much like other Air Max retros over the last couple years. The 2021 box includes a throwback box label on the reverse side. Nike also threw in the arch supports, much like the original release. Finally, there’s some black flat laces included just like the OG.

Thoughts on the Persian Violets

I’m not a huge fan of the model but I do like it enough to buy one pair for the collection. The OG colorway is the best bet on an Air Max like this when looking for a token pair for the stacks.

Don’t get me wrong, many great colorways of the sneaker exist. However, if just getting one pair, the OG is the best as far as being a throwback and also looking super sharp!

How Do Air Max BW Fit?

The Air Max BW OG release from 2021 has a true to size fit.

The fit on this shoe to is a bit more generous than one would expect. The toebox seems like it would be quite narrow, but within a minute of trying them on, it becomes apparent that the fit is quite accommodating!

As far as underfoot, the “bigger” air unit isn’t offering much more than what other Air Maxes currently offer. However the ride is still comfy in that retro runner type of way. Combine that with the flexible mesh, synthetic leather and suede used on the upper and we have a decently comfortable retro!
