Originally released in 1991 and designed by Tinker Hatfield and Bruce Kilgore, the Nike Air 180 was one of the first sneakers to feature 180 degrees of visible Air cushioning that directly contacted the ground. Over time, it’s become a cult-favorite retro runner, appreciated for both its heritage design and comfortable ride.
This pair stands out thanks to its thoughtful details. The wood grain texture on the Swoosh and back panel mimics a boardwalk or pier, while the subtle gradient on the mesh underlays can be interpreted as either a sunrise sky or the transition from sand to ocean. You even get textured “dust” detailing on the midsole, resembling grains of sand—small touches that really bring the beach concept together.
I passed on these at full retail initially, but once they dropped to around $100 shipped from Reynolds and Sons, it became an easy pickup. I’ve always liked the Air 180 for its comfort, and this colorway adds just enough detail to make it stand out while still being easy to wear. These days especially, I find myself gravitating more toward comfortable retro sneakers, and this pair checks both the comfort and style boxes.
They come in the standard grey Air 180 box with light khaki oval laces that almost resemble SB-style laces.
Materials
Material-wise, this pair switches things up from a typical Air 180. Instead of the usual felt overlays, you get suede overlays, paired with a more canvas-like textile mesh underlay rather than neoprene. The woodgrain areas are built on a leather base, adding to the layered look. While nothing here is ultra-premium or buttery, the variety of materials and attention to detail elevate this beyond a standard GR, making it feel like a more thoughtful, premium lifestyle release.
Fit & Comfort
Fit is true to size, and comfort is one of the highlights. The combination of Air cushioning and Phylon midsole provides a soft, stable ride that works well for everyday wear. The sock-like bootie construction can feel a bit snug or constricting to some, but I personally find it comfortably secure for a few hours at a time. One thing to note is that the canvas-style underlay may run a bit warmer and need more break-in than the usual neoprene.
