Adidas Yeezy 500 Utility Black Review

By Anthony Levine, longtime sneaker collector.

Yayyyy I finally own some Yeezys! I’ve wanted a pair for a long time, but it wasn’t until the Adidas Yeezy 500 Utility Black that a good looking pair didn’t cost 1.5x or more on retail.

Now that Yeezys are more widely available, collectors like me can finally afford to step into grabbing some more higher profile Adidas releases.

These are more of a charcoal grey than a true black. Many people have expressed disappointment at the colorway, yet for me these are perfect. The dark grey means these actually go with a lot of different types of outfits and even work as a summer shoe. I like these with either dark or medium wash denim and a grey, black or white top. I threw a flannel on and it looked great with a couple different outfits featuring these! Don’t be afraid to experiment a little considering the tonal aspect of the shoe.

Have I completely crossed over into hypebeast mode? Boost, Yeezy and Flyknit now? Well, as much as I love retros, I can’t just buy retro after retro. Constantly spicing up the collecting and mixing in the new with the old is the way to go. Thankfully, these are a bit more affordable now which means it’s not such an uphill battle to grab some popular kicks!

How Are The Materials?

These have very good materials. The suede is not super buttery but it’s definitely lush and soft. It’s got a purposely rough look and texturing. Meanwhile, the leather is soft and the rubbery part around the mudguard seems solidly built. Finally, some 3M piping and accents help give this otherwise plain colorway just enough flash.

How Do They Fit?

I would say true to size is a safe bet for these Adidas Yeezy 500. I went with a half size down and these are still very comfortable, although I do feel my foot touching the front and sides. The toebox has a great slope to it, which looks awesome, but if you’re not used to shoes hitting the top of your toes then it might feel a little weird. Overall though, even though these don’t have boost, I still find them very comfy.
