The Nike SB Dunk Low Songkran (Som Tum) is a culturally inspired release celebrating Songkran, Thailand’s traditional New Year festival typically held in April. This SB Dunk Low skate shoe pulls from food, street culture, and everyday materials tied to Thai life, resulting in a detailed, wheat-style colorway that blends storytelling with wearable design.
Launched in 2002, the Nike SB Dunk reworked the original 1985 Nike Dunk for skateboarding by adding padded tongues, Zoom Air cushioning, and improved traction. Since then, it’s become one of the most recognizable skate sneakers and streetwear staples, with releases ranging from simple GRs to more detailed, theme-driven pairs like this one.
This pair is loaded with thoughtful details. The basket-weave textured upper mimics woven rice containers, with contrast stitching resembling the ties used to hold them together. Silver hits on the heel reference aluminum cooking pots, while the embroidered detailing on the back nods to tuk tuk design elements, complete with Nike branding written in Thai. The inside tongue tags continue the theme, featuring a rice cooker graphic on one side and som tum (Thai papaya salad) on the other. The insole artwork resembles rice bag branding, and there’s even a hidden lotus graphic beneath the insole on the Zoom Air unit, tying everything back to Thai culture.
It’s been a while since I’ve had a pair with that woven, hemp-like look—reminds me of some older pairs I used to have. On top of that, I’m a big fan of Thai food, so all the details and references here really hit. I also like that it still basically works as a “wheat-style” SB Dunk, just with more going on. I grabbed these for retail from Concepts as soon as I could since I didn’t want to risk missing out.
Packaging comes in the standard purple Nike SB box, but with custom leaf-print paper, and includes two sets of SB laces—a bright orange pair to match the accents and a beige pair to blend in with the upper.
Materials
Despite the woven look, the overlays are actually made from debossed suede with a suede Swoosh. The underlays are some kind of synthetic woven material. The material quality is good here, especially for what’s labeled as a general release. Between the texture, detailing, and overall build, it honestly feels closer to a collab-level SB Dunk in terms of execution. Nothing overly premium in isolation, but everything comes together really well.
Fit & Comfort
Fit is standard SB Dunk Low sizing. I usually go half a size up to allow a bit more room and make break-in easier due to the padded tongue. Underfoot, you get the usual Zoom Air cushioning, which provides decent comfort. These work well for a few hours of casual wear, though I wouldn’t personally push them into all-day territory.
If these are sold out at different stores online, you can try looking for them on eBay.
