The Nike SB Dunk Low Muni Fast Pass pays tribute to the San Francisco Muni’s iconic monthly transit cards once used across San Francisco. These passes were a staple for locals (and especially for skaters) throughout the 1980s and 1990s. The sneaker recreates the colorful design language of the passes, and while more colorways based on different Muni card designs are reportedly on the way, this is the first pair to release.
Introduced as a college basketball shoe in 1985, the Nike Dunk eventually found a second life with skateboarders in the 1990s thanks to its durable build and grippy outsole. In 2002, Nike SB officially re-engineered the silhouette as the Nike SB Dunk, adding padded tongues, Zoom Air cushioning, and improved traction to better suit skateboarding while maintaining the Dunk’s classic court-inspired design.
Design-wise, this pair has some standout details. The side panels are split vertically down the center, with brown toward the front and orange toward the back, creating a look that references the color blocking of the original transit cards. An iridescent, shimmery metallic Swoosh adds another visual element, while the SB lettering on the inside tongue tag mirrors the typography of the Muni passes. The insoles also feature a Golden Gate Bridge graphic alongside Nike branding, reinforcing the San Francisco theme.
Nike SB has referenced San Francisco culture in past releases, and being originally from the Bay Area, that automatically made this pair more interesting to me. I kept striking out on drops at first, but eventually managed to secure a pair for retail through Blue Flowers. The split color blocking seems to be a bit divisive (haha), as some people aren’t into it. However, I actually like the concept, and the iridescent Swoosh adds a nice touch.
Packaging follows the standard Nike SB purple box, and the shoes include brown and light grey SB laces.
Materials
Material quality is quite nice here. The upper is mostly covered in soft nubuck, which gives the sneaker a premium feel and a smooth texture throughout. The Swoosh uses a shiny iridescent synthetic leather, creating a reflective look that contrasts nicely with the matte nubuck panels.
Fit & Comfort
Fit is typical SB Dunk sizing. Many people go true to size, but I personally prefer going a half size up to account for the thicker padded tongue and the slightly snug fit through the midfoot. Underfoot, you get the familiar Zoom Air cushioning in the heel, which provides decent impact protection and comfort whether skating or wearing them casually.
If these are sold out at different stores online, you can try looking for them on eBay.
