The ASICS GEL-Cumulus 16 Tomo is a standout collaboration bringing Y2K-style running vibes with a creative twist. This pair features a reflective mesh upper and mood ring-inspired accents, giving the Cumulus silhouette a playful, modern update.
The Cumulus 16 originally released in 2014. This collaboration celebrates the concept of Tomo, meaning “friend” in Japanese, and was executed across seven participating stores including Concepts, Extra Butter, Feature, Lapstone & Hammer, Sneaker Politics, Somewhere, and The Whitaker Group. Key features on this pair include Kanji detailing on the left tongue and right insole as well as a gradient on the Asics stripes from green in the front to purple in back to represent the range of mood ring colors.
I wanted a collab on an ASICS in the Y2K style, and this one was available for a significant discount at Lapstone & Hammer, which made the decision much easier. I picked them up for only $116. The silver and green tones with the fade to purple on the ASICS stripes is a color combo I’m really feeling here.
These come in the regular ASICS brown box and are laced up with cream laces, with the mood ring gradient green-purple laces included as a spare.
Materials
The build uses metallic synthetic overlays over a breathable mesh base. It’s well-constructed and durable—definitely more about performance and engineering than premium material feel, which fits the model’s DNA.
Fit & Comfort
True to size with that comfy Asics Gel feel, slightly roomy but comfortable. Cushioning offers a soft yet responsive underfoot feel suitable for casual wear. If you have a wide foot, consider trying a pair on before purchasing this model as these have a fairly sleek toebox.
If these are sold out at different stores online, you can try looking for them on eBay.
