The New Balance 2002R Dream State gets its name from the purplish-blue tones that dominate the colorway—a calming mix of blue, lavender, and purple that feels both subtle and unique. It’s one of countless colorways that have dropped for this model, showing how strong the 2002R’s run continues to be even years after its revival.
The 2002R originally debuted in 2020 as a rework of the New Balance 2002, which first released in 2010 as part of NB’s premium performance lineup. The newer 2002R takes the upper from that original silhouette but pairs it with the 860v2 midsole for that early 2000s tech-runner look. This hybrid approach has helped push New Balance into the lifestyle spotlight again, in conjunction with some collabs and limited releases, of course.
I grabbed this “Dream State” colorway on a huge sale from Foot Locker—around $70 shipped—and for that price, it was an instant cop. I’ve been mostly Nike-focused this year, but coming back to New Balance reminded me how great these are on foot. The mix of hues and materials hits perfectly, and the comfort level just makes them an easy wear day to day.
This pair comes in the standard dark grey New Balance box used for their newer models and includes a set of lavender laces to match the tone of the upper.
Materials
Construction here is what you’d expect from a standard 2002R: suede and mesh upper with minor leather detailing. The quality is solid—nothing like the Made in USA line, but for this price range, it’s right on target. At full retail, they’re decent; on sale, they’re an absolute steal.
Fit & Comfort
Fit is true to size with a standard width. Underfoot comfort is excellent thanks to the 860v2 tooling. For everyday wear or walking around, the 2002R delivers that cushy, retro-runner comfort New Balance has built its name on.
If these are sold out at different stores online, you can try looking for them on eBay.
