The Nike Air Tech Challenge 2 originally debuted in 1989, and while this “Racer Pink” release isn’t an OG men’s colorway, it actually nods to a 1990 women’s exclusive. It’s not something you see every day, which gives this retro a unique throwback appeal.
This model became famous as Andre Agassi’s signature sneaker during his rise in professional tennis. Designed by Tinker Hatfield, it stood out as a major departure from the conservative styles dominating the sport at the time.
The colorway caught my attention early, but I waited until the price dropped. I like the vintage effect they used on the shoe here and I’ve always had love for the Tech Challenge line. This felt like the right time to finally pick up another pair. A solid sale at Finish Line plus some reward points made this pair a steal at around $70 shipped.
Packaging is also a nice touch — you get the retro-style Nike box with the orange flip-up lid and two-tone grey bottom, kind of like what we saw with Air Max 90 recrafts, but properly sized this time. White laces come standard. These also include a plastic Nike hangtag.
Material
Materials-wise, the upper is mostly leather. It’s not premium by any means, but for a retro Sportswear model, the quality is decent. Everything feels well put together — no major glue stains or loose stitching — just a clean, classic build that stays true to the original design.
Fit & Comfort
Fit is true to size, and the overall shape holds up well compared to past retros. Comfort is typical of retro Nike Sportswear models: not the softest. These are slightly better underfoot than I expected. There’s just enough cushioning for casual wear, though I wouldn’t recommend standing or walking in them all day.
If these are sold out at different stores online, you can try looking for them on eBay.
