The Nike Air Max 90 Black & University Gold came in pretty quietly, without much hype or buzz, but sometimes that’s the best setup for a sleeper pick. The sneaker gets its name from the colorway.
Speaking of, the colorway is straightforward — a mostly black upper with clean hits of University Gold to bring just the right amount of contrast. It’s not a loud or neon kind of yellow, but still pops nicely off the darker base.
I was browsing around and spotted this colorway on Shoe Palace for about $85 shipped, and that sealed the deal. Black and yellow has always been a combo I gravitate toward — it’s my high school’s colors, plus it’s got that undeniable Wu-Tang energy. For a classic like the Air Max 90, this just felt like a solid pickup, especially at a discount
The pair comes in the regular orange Nike Sportswear box, no frills there. Inside, you get black flat laces already in the shoe.
Materials
Material-wise, we’re looking at a pretty standard setup for a general release AM90, though this pair does throw in a couple upgrades. The mudguard is smooth leather, the underlays are mesh, and instead of the typical felt-like overlays you get on many GRs, these feature suede on both the Swoosh and overlays. It’s not premium suede by any means, but it’s a nice change from the norm and helps give the shoe a slightly more refined feel. The quality overall isn’t mind-blowing, but construction feels solid and nothing seems rushed or sloppy.
Fit & Comfort
As far as comfort and fit, it’s the usual Air Max 90 experience — true to size, with solid everyday comfort, especially for casual wear. The shape looks decent on foot, and the visible Air unit in the heel still holds its own for all-day wear.
