The Nike Air Max Plus Hyper Blue is back for 2025, bringing with it one of the most iconic OG colorways from 1998. Some even consider this to be the definitive Air Max Plus, and as a fan of the model, I had to complete the OG set alongside my recent pickups of the Sunset and Voltage Purple pairs.
Like the other recent retros, Nike made some tweaks to the details. The gradient is lighter at the top compared to past retros. Another noticeable change is that the back portion of the midsole is black this time around—a slight but noticeable shift from previous versions. As usual, Nike likes to switch things up, even when bringing back an OG colorway.
Online pics don’t do these justice. The gradient pops and the yellow swoosh and accents add the perfect contrast. Seeing them in hand confirmed that I made the right call pulling the trigger. I used a coupon code on Darkside Initiative, which helped take a little off the top, but I still paid a bit more than I ideally wanted. That said, they’re still obtained for under retail, so it’s all good! The shoe has been a classic for over two decades, and this 2025 retro keeps the legacy going strong.
Nike kept it OG-style with the box, using the same red and cardboard-colored top with a black bottom that they brought back for the Voltage Purple pair. Inside, they come pre-laced with skinny black oval laces.
Materials
Same as the other recent OG retros—Nike went with the usual mix of synthetic leather/nubuck on the mudguard, TPU cage waves, and a mesh underlay. The Air Max Plus isn’t known for premium materials, but these feel solid and well put together. They’re durable, breathable, and exactly what you’d expect from a TN retro.
Fit & Comfort
The fit is snug at true to size, molding to your foot as you break them in. If you prefer a roomier feel, going up half a size might be worth considering. As for comfort, the Air units give that signature bounce and lightness underfoot. It’s not groundbreaking compared to modern running tech, but it holds up well and makes for a comfortable all-day wear.
