Nike Air Max 1 University Blue Review

Updated March 3, 2024 by Anthony

The Nike Air Max 1 University Blue are a basic, yet super clean colorway. The sneakers get their nickname from the colorway and are a GR (general release).

I always did like the University Blue color scheme on sneakers. Typically we see it on Air Jordans as a send up to Michael Jordan’s UNC alma mater. Clearly, Nike uses it on lots of other models as well.

In fact, one of my favorite sneakers in the collection is a pair of 1999 UNC Dunk Highs.

These come in the regular Nike Sportswear box and include just the plain white laces shown. Otherwise, no extras with this release. Again, these are a GR so I wouldn’t expect much else besides the shoes here.

Materials

These have the classic Air Max 1 combination of felt overlays and mesh underlays. This isn’t what I would call a “materials” shoe. Similar to many other GR Air Max 1s, we get just enough material for these to function as a shoe.

To the sneaker’s credit, the felt is at least soft to the touch. But the point with these is the colorway, not the material quality.

Fit & Comfort

These have a slightly narrow fit but the felt and mesh uppers require little to no break in time. The pliable materials on the uppers adds more step-in comfort to these.

I opt for true to size on these type of Air Max 1s. If you typically have problems with Nikes feeling narrow, then maybe a half size up is in order for the AM1 for you. Generally speaking though, true to size should still work for most people.

Air Max cushioning does not have that comfy, cloudlike Boost or React type feel. It’s a bit more basic and solid underfoot. Still, I wouldn’t call these uncomfortable. I think the sneaker is comfy enough to rock for at least a few hours at a time. Air Max 1s, for me at least, are on the comfier side of retro Nike models.

If these are sold out in stores, you can try looking for them on eBay.
