New Balance 1400 J-Crew Review

Updated December 3, 2020 by Anthony

I’ve been filling in holes in my NB collection lately. I’ve got 1500s, I’ve got 1300s, but until now, no 1400s. Thus today’s pickup are these New Balance 1400 J-Crew in raw steel.

The 1400 first released in 1994. It was supposed to release in the 80s after the 1300 but wound up not debuting until after the 1500 had released in 1993. J-Crew’s first NB collab was on this model in 2010 and so 10 years later we have this pair which released along 4 other colorways.

These ship in a grey New Balance Made In USA box and include two paper Made in USA tags. They come laced up with flat grey laces. Nothing else is included with the sneaker. Aside from the J crew price tag on the box there is nothing even indicating a collab or exclusive colorway.

These help fill a J-Crew NB collab and 1400 hole in the collection with one shoe. I think any fan of New Balance retro runners is going to like these, so I can easily recommend this shoe or one of the other colorways. If you like the 1300 in particular, these are very close to that in design.

How Are The Materials?

For a Made In USA shoe, these represent! The bulk of the upper is a soft short-haired suede. It still gives off a backstroke although it’s not the most lush NB suede you’ve ever seen. Still, great quality overall. There is leather on the N logos and that also feels soft to the touch. Also, the 3M used on the heeltab is very bright! If you purchase NB strictly for materials, these will not disappoint, although the 998s from the Made collection do seem to outdo these (and most other NB to be fair)

How Do They Fit?

These New Balance 1400 J-Crew are comfy in a snug way at true to size. These fit similarly to the NB 1300 albeit with slightly more room and a slightly higher profile. The profile shape is still very on point though!
