While the Handball Spezial are a specific Adidas model, the “Spezial” or SPZL line are a set of direct 1-to-1 retros of heritage Adidas models. These Adidas ZX 530 SPZL are an example of a shoe I never heard of receiving this retro treatment.
The original ZX 530 are a model from the 2000s according to the internet. I personally never knew about the originals, but since the SPZL are a 1 to 1, I’d have to assume that these are a direct copy. The only things that indicate these are a modern version are the SPZL found on the right shoe near the ankle collar and the Spezial on the tongue tag. The shoes come with just one set of ivory laces and a leather Spezial hangtag. At first it seems like these come in a standard Adidas box, but the Spezial print on the top of the box shows that these are a bit different!
I thought I had one of the SPZL releases with the Handball Spezial, but it turns out I was only half right. Here is a non-handball retro model labeled SPZL and now I can see what the fuss is about. Since information on the ZX 530 is hard to come by, these do a good job of taking a relatively obscure model and giving it some light!
How Are The Materials?
These feature grey suede, a couple different types of mesh and some leather. The leather seems very soft and of at least decent quality. Both the nylon-looking mesh on the side and the more standard type mesh on the toebox seem well done. The grey suede on the eyelets and toebox seems very soft and smooth although not very lush, while the suede towards the back seems to be a little rougher and thicker, albeit the same colorway. Overall the material mix is good and the suede seems satisfactory for a retro model remake.
How Do They Fit?
These Adidas ZX 530 SPZL fit true to size. These fit very comfortably at that size with similar cushioning to other Adidas casual retros. These are comfy to wear for a few hours without issue.
