These 2003 Nike Dunk High Varsity Red represent pretty much my favorite year for non-sb dunks.
There are many examples of pretty much perfect dunks from that time, with good shape and materials. These are a basic red/white pair of dunks which could be termed as a St John’s colorway. I grabbed these way back in the day for $50-60 or so if I remember correctly. To this day, they are one of my most reliable pairs!
My typical outfit of some light or medium wash jeans and a grey top work well with these. You can also do a darker denim although I’d keep the top a lighter color – these shoes give off a “bright” look to me that doesn’t pair well with a full blackout type outfit.
How Are The Materials?
These are really top notch. The leather on these is really nice and they feature the mesh tongue instead of the nylon tongue, which makes them fit and feel a little bit like SB dunk highs from around the same time. The only thing that’s missing that would make these a straight up SB are the zoom air insoles and some oval SB laces.
How Do They Fit?
The 2003 Nike Dunk High Varsity Red is insanely comfortable. I went true to size on my pair. I don’t miss the zoom air insoles actually, these feel like a regular pair of comfortable SB’s from that time, if not a little more lightweight!
