Nike SB Dunk Low Grateful Dead Green Bear Review

By Anthony Levine, longtime sneaker collector.

While the Ben & Jerry SBs were based off the Chunky Monkey flavor, another flavor they could have gone with is Cherry Garcia. No need though, because instead we get these Nike SB Dunk Low Grateful Dead Green Bears.

These released in a pack of three alongside an orange and yellow pair with the orange pair being the rarest and yellow pair being the most common. The kicks are based off of the iconic “marching bears” that first appeared on back artwork of the Grateful Dead album “Bear’s Choice”. That album art was done by Bob Thomas.

I’ll admit I’m not a “deadhead” but I do appreciate a couple of Grateful Dead jams and they do have a huge fanbase to this day. It’s only right after all the tie dye and Ben and Jerry’s sneakers from Nike SB that we get more of this type of sneaker. Too bad these are another particularly limited pair, so if you get an opportunity to cop at retail, definitely take advantage!

Features/Extras

These come in a rainbow Nike SB Quickstrike box. They ship with green and blue sets of SB laces with themed red/blue/white thunderbolt aglets. These are loaded with references to the bear artwork such as the bear logo on the tongue with the Nike swoosh, the jagged extra piece on the swoosh representing the bear scarves and the insole graphic with all 5 bears. There are also a number of Grateful Dead references. These include the Nike lettering on the back in the GD album font, the “steal your face” logo over the zoom air unit on the insole and the lightning graphic on the back of the tongue. Finally, these feature a stash pocket inside the tongue.

How Are The Materials?

These feature some really nice materials! I had baby bear dunks back in the day, and these remind me of those. The composition is mostly suede and fur, with the suede being very soft and buttery. The fur seems to be very plush. These also feature felt on the swoosh, which isn’t particularly impressive but also not bad either. Overall the materials are very good on these and help to make the shoe that much more special.

How Do They Fit?

As plush as they look from the outside, the Nike SB Dunk Low Grateful Dead Green Bear fit like a modern SB, which for me means going a half size up. This gives additional comfort and room and minimizes break-in and pinky rub. I think the suede around the toe would help these break in quickly if I had to go true to size, but I was able to secure a half size up and I’ll take comfort over pinky pain any day.
