Nike Air Diamond Fury ’96 Freshwater Review

By Anthony Levine, longtime sneaker collector.

The Nike Air Diamond Fury is a baseball trainer that Ken Griffey, Jr along with several other players wore in 1995. While Griffey would eventually get his own line of shoes, he already had some special detailing on his pair of Diamond Fury with a 24 on the upper near the outside of the ankle and a “JR” logo on the tongue.

Nike Air Diamond Fury ’96 Freshwater

Now that 20 years have passed, the Nike Air Diamond Fury has been retro’d finally (with a ’96 added to the name) in a few colorways including this Freshwater pair which is fairly close to the pair Griffey wore. The only obvious difference is that the originals came with black laces while these come with green.

The swoosh on these is smooth leather while the rest of the shoe is a mixture of a suede/nubuck type material and mesh. The quality is typical Nike retro basketball quality, that is to say, passable. You definitely won’t be amazed at the suedes they’re using here, but the sneaker is at least solidly built.

With respect to comfort, these are fairly decent for a retro basketball sneaker from this time. Of course they feel huge on feet, given the extra height and padding used. But that’s part of the charm for these!
