Air Tech Challenge II Kumquat Review

By Anthony Levine, longtime sneaker collector. Updated: 10-26-2016

If you know Nike trainers, you probably know about the Hot Lava ATCII. When it comes to non-OG colorways though, the Air Tech Challenge II Kumquat is my personal favorite.

The shoe gets its nickname from the colorway, which is also the shoe’s strongest point in my opinion. The offwhite used on the shoe combined with the light orange and blue makes for a lowkey yet smooth look.

Andre Agassi I believe started off his Nike-wearing days in the Air Trainer 1, and later received his own line with the Air Tech Challenge. The ATCII definitely brought the model to the forefront of tennis shoe models, and the shoe is continuously retro’d. The Hot Lava colorway seems to drop every couple of years, while the Kumquats might just be a one time retro colorway.

How Are The Materials?

The materials are typical Nike GR synthetic leather. Not terrible, but not too impressive either. Basically, you aren’t buying these for the materials. In this case, at least for me, it’s a matter of colorway and model.

How Do They Fit?

The Air Tech Challenge II Kumquat fit true to size and are fairly comfortable. This technology is pretty old, so these are more about the looks than about lunar, boost or any other fancy newfangled tech. That means these are going to be a little on the heavy and bulky side if you are used to wearing lightweight runners. If you are used to Nike retros though, these will probably be no big deal. The shoe itself provides nice, solid support and a snug but comfy fit.
